I've just enabled time machine in my MAC and when I am using word 2011 I am now having a lot of trouble. After the first or second autosave, an error message appears indicating that a file cannot be saved because of a disk error or an improper disk format. It asks to save the file with a new name in a different location. I do so and when I re-open the old file it opens as a read only file. I therefore am having to turn off time machine because every 2 or 3 instance of autosave I get the same message. Something else I would do, is make sure that AutoRecovery is set to no less than 10 minutes and that the Time Machine backup is set to no less than 1 hour. Additionally, if you by chance are using a Virtual Machine on your system, either Parallels or VMWare I would not include the virtual machine file as part of the Time Machine backup.
Richard V. Michaels info@greatcirclelearning.com Provides free AuthorTec add-ins for Mac-Office and Win-Office. What I have noticed, though, is that even with the function off, Word saves temporary files (which I have not found a means of turning off) that sometimes are called word work files, which I suspect are at the root of the problem.
This is because when I get the message indicating that the file cannot be saved it also indicates that the file is being used by another process (Error code -43). Therefore, what I suspect is that the temporary file has been backed up onto the time machine and my user does not have access to the external drive where I have the time machine. Could this be the case? The.tmp file you see is the result of an interrupted renaming process. Word creates a temporary file whenever you save the currently-open document. Usually, the original file is then deleted and the.tmp file is renamed to become the new saved file. It seems that Time Machine kicks in and establishes a lock on the.tmp file to back it up, but it either does not release it (unlikely) or Word does not retry accessing it (likely).

In either case, Word is prevented from renaming it and panics. At that point, all you are left with is that.tmp file that could not be renamed.
