In particular, I want a viewer which will simply display the embedded JPEG in the file, rather than rendering the RAW file according to its own interpretation. Any suggestions? Select the files you want to look at and tap the space bar. Or drag them onto Preview.

Or set the folder into CoverFlow mode and flip through the photos. Thanks, but this results in a rerendering of the file, so e.g. If I shot RAW in B&W mode, I still see color images. Any suggestions? Thanks, Hello, Not exactly what you are asking for, but until then, try your Finder, it's free and you already have it.

Check out this link for a good explanation. Thanks for the link. Interesting stuff. Unfortunately, as noted above, Finder and Preview both seem to ignore the preview embedded in the RAW file. This results in things like B&W images being shown in color, and more generally, colors significantly different from the camera processing.

I know it is an extra step but once imported into Aperture (and Aperture set-up to not create JPEG previews) simply hitting 'P' (or pressing the Quick Preview button) will show you the embedded JPEG (and Aperture will not waste any processor-cycles doing any raw rendering, though it will do so during the import process to create the thumbnails).

Good to know, definitely a handy feature. Still, I'd really rather avoid the import step altogether. Once stuff is imported, it should look mostly as I want (thanks to the wonders of Lightroom presets!).

Shootrawbp wrote: Photo Mechanic might do what you want. Its main offering is speed, which it achieves by using the JPEG preview that's embedded within the raw file, rather than re-rendering it. It's that JPEG that you see on your camera's rear LCD screen (even if you shoot raw only) so if you shoot raw with your camera set to B&W, say, you should get to see B&W images in Photo Mechanic as well. The downside is that it's $150 US.

There's a 20-day demo available, though. I'd forgotten about Photomechanic. Good program, but $150 is a bit steep for my use. Fortunately, there seems to be a good alternative (Lyn) mentioned below.
