The job of kicking off this year's South By Southwest Interactive conference fell firmly in the hands of none other than MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis - and really a show like this couldn't ask for a better, more enthusiastic evangelist for emerging technologies. And certainly the fact that Pettis' company has firm ties to the event doesn't hurt matters either.

Pettis spent much of his talk espousing the 'next industrial revolution,' a phenomenon in which he sees desktop 3D printing playing a pivotal role - MakerBot's 3D printing specifically, if he has his way. PayPal has announced that it's bringing a new iOS SDK and some new API tools to SXSW next week. Earlier this week, an un-named man in the United States had 75 percent of his skull replaced with a 3D-printed plastic prosthetic, the first-known operation of its kind. The transplant was carried out by Oxford Performance Materials, which received approval to carry out such procedures from the US Food and Drug Administration last month. The company crafted the artificial skull based on a 3D scan of the patient's head, and the polyetherketoneketone prosthetic sports holes meant to encourage the growth of new cells and bone. According to the firm, about 500 people in the US could benefit from this technology each month. It's a fascinating implementation 20:35 Uhr.

PayPal today introduced a new mobile SDK that allows iOS app developers to integrate PayPal checkout and mobile credit card payment mechanisms directly into their apps. Currently, iOS developers can include PayPal payment buttons into their apps, but users are redirected to Safari to complete their transactions. Now, users will be able to pay without ever leaving the app, including using PayPal's card.io technology that allows users to pay with a credit card by taking a picture of it rather than manually entering the credit card number.

Earlier this week, Geek.com highlighted a growing a number of complaints from owners of Apple's 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro regarding overactive fans. The app is designed to be easy for employees to use and a headache-free tool for employers to setup. In late 2012, a new Apple seller appeared on eBay, offering Apple-certified refurbished products. The storefront, known simply as Refurbished-Outlet, is believed to be run by Apple itself. An iOS developer has made an app to sync the Philips Hue iOS-controlled LED light bulbs with music. The $2.99 Ambify pulls tracks from the music library on an iPhone or iPad and plays them while simultaneously controlling the colors and brightness of the Philips Hue lights, creating a rave-like atmosphere with blinking multi-colored light bulbs synced to the music.

Ambify - the Hue enabled jukebox turns music into light using Philips Hue Smart Bulbs. The FTC held a workshop on mobile payments last year, and it's now followed that up with a full report that raises a few concerns and offers some recommendations for the industry. Those include the expected issues of privacy and security, which the FTC encourages companies to step up their efforts on, as well as the issue of billing disputes. On that latter front, the FTC draws attention to one problem in particular known as 'cramming,' in which companies or individuals place fraudulent charges on a user's cellphone bill.

His favorite track? We wouldn't exactly call the social networking-focused HTC ChaCha (aka Status) and Salsa resounding successes in the smartphone world when they were quickly overshadowed by just about everything with a Facebook app, really. Still, there's been murmurs of a comeback, and Unwired View's historically reliable evleaks has obtained specs for what's supposedly the follow-up. The HTC Myst (Myst #UL, to be exact) wouldn't have any special tricks on the surface beyond preloaded Face 17:50 Uhr. Skype for iOS has been updated to version 4.6, with improvements to the experience of making and receiving Skype calls as well as numerous bug fixes. There's been a complete overhaul to the UI when making and receiving calls. On first impressions, I wouldn't say it's any easier to use than the previous version, but it's a cleaner look that has an air of freshness to it!

According to Skype's blog, other major improvements include one-to-one chats appearing in the correct order and the ability to select messages as read in a few taps. Additionally, there have been bug fixes to Voice Over, conversations, file-transfer and account editing. The update arrived yesterday.

Social networking apps have climbed nine places year-on-year in the App Annie rankings of monthly revenues (via The Next Web), moving from 12th place last January to third place in January 2013.As of January 2013, the Social Networking category ranked third in monthly revenues, behind only Games and Productivity in the iOS App Store.

What's more, Spindle is now making its social, location 15:35 Uhr.

Earlier this year, analysts from Detwiler Fenton claimed that Apple's rumored lower-cost iPhone would use a Snapdragon chip from Qualcomm rather than one of Apple's own A-series chips, arguing that the ability to integrate Bluetooth and Wi-Fi directly into the main chip would allow Apple to save on costs. China Times (spotted and translated by Japanese blog Macotakara) now cites an unnamed source making the same claim. InSight is an app being developed for Google Glass by Duke University that helps you identify your chums, even when they've got their back to you, by channeling its inner Joan Rivers. All your pals have to do is submit some self-portraits to the app, which then creates a spatiogram - identifying the colors, textures and patterns with which they've adorned themselves. That data is then pushed to Google Glass, hopefully allowing you to avoid the usual ' 11:05 Uhr.

Digitimes is reporting that both Apple and Samsung are expected to introduce wireless charging solutions for their 'flagship models' of smartphones in 2013. While their 'industry sources' pinpoint Qi inductive charging as the technology to be used by Samsung, Apple appears to be working on their own version of wireless charging.Apple is likely to adopt the wireless charging technology developed internally, but it remains unknown if the next-generation iPhone will come with built-in wireless charging capability or with other attached accessories, said the sources.Samsung's solution is said to be likely an add-on accessory to replace the back-cover of their smartphones. Judging by recently announced projects like Go Mobile, it's quite clear that US Bank is working hard at keeping up with the mobile banking curve. Software development tool maker Telerik has released an automated testing tool for iOS applications called Test Studio for iOS (free). The program introduces a cloud sync web portal for both test automation and beta user feedback and works with web, native and hybrid apps. The cloud sync portal gives developers a way to get real-time feedback from beta testers, track automated tests and even author UI tests that can then be run on the app being developed.

It avoids image-based detection in favor of object-based recording. GoGo Inflight, which offers paid Internet service on various airlines serving North America has reported that mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets now make up 67 percent of the devices being used to connect to its service, with tablets just edging out laptops and smartphones. Like other actual-usage surveys we have reported on recently, GoGo found that around 84 percent of mobile devices accessing their network across 2012 were using iOS, with 16 percent using Android - though the Android percentage is growing slowly but steadily. Google's Motorola unit seems to be facing some hard times - according to an email acquired by the Wall Street Journal, up to ten percent of the division's workforce is facing layoffs.

'While we're very optimistic about the new products in our pipeline, we still face challenges,' explained the email. High costs and losses in competitive markets are forcing the company to make staffing cuts. 'These cuts are a continuation of the reductions we announced last summer,' a spokesman told the WSJ. 'It's obviously very hard for the employees concerned and we're committed to helping them through this difficult transition.

Rovio has announced another game, and it's yet another surprising title from the Finish developer of Angry Birds. GroupMe today updated their group chat app to version 4.1, adding a gallery view and a feature called Split, which allows users to split costs and collect money from their group. The company detailed potential uses for the feature on its blog:You can start a Split within any of your groups, just like you can attach a photo or a location. You bought concert tickets for everyone in the group? Attach a Split and get your money back right away, instead of waiting to get cash in person. Buying a group gift?

Two new studies - one focusing on enterprise usage of mobile devices, the other looking at tablets - have shored up conventional wisdom on the distribution of platforms, relegating everything but iOS and Android offerings to 'other,' but providing some new insights and a hint of changing trends. Advertising network and mobile analyst firm Chitika finds that the iPad continues its overwhelming dominance, but shows Android tablets finally inching up in usage, while Egnyte's study finds Android falling in corporate influence. I know developer Gavin Bowman of Retro Dreamer (co-creator of apps like Velocispider and Duckers, along with artist Craig Sharpe) fairly well, having met up with him at a number of different conferences and events in the past.

His studio released a game called Socks a little while ago, which was just a fun, simple puzzle game (meant for kids, really) where you matched socks of similar patterns. 'It's fun,' I told him after I played that one, 'but it needs some more depth - a real progression system.' A little while later, Gavin showed me a new game he was working on that actually used my feedback (which, disclaimer, 02:05 Uhr. Facebook today announced a major revamp coming to its signature News Feed every user sees when they launch the Facebook app or login to Facebook on the desktop.

The updated News Feed is heavily inspired by Facebook's mobile app, which was first developed for iOS. While there are several changes to the News Feed coming, the most obvious will appear in the desktop browser. Now Facebook's website will feature the same left-side navigation browser that users reveal on its iOS apps by swiping to the right. At the Ford Foundation in upper Manhattan this morning, representatives from inside and outside the game industry spoke to the issues that LGBT gamers face and how best to fix them in the first ever 'Full Spectrum' event.
