Nocturne's preferences can be played around with to customize day and night vision according to your needs. You can disable shadows and your desktop and create your own night vision by selecting two tints from the full color spectrum.

I work usually late in the evening with only a little ambient light in the office. Touch typing works perfectly without too much light on the keyboard and any superfluous light from the monitor is very distracting and starts to hurt on the eyes after a while.

Unfortunately is the lowest setting for my Mac’s back-light still way to bright. With Nocturne I have two favourite options: a) Inverted, dark with a little colour in the text mark-up when I am writing long texts without reading anything on-line or from paper. B) Not inverted, considerably brighter with tinted display (red or green) when it's not that dark and/or I need to read something during work. My eyes love nocturne B-) Pros: Free, stable, does exactly what it is supposed to, lots of options to tinker with.
