Much cheaper than another internal and this one also reads Blu-Ray (although I have yet to test this). Bonus, it also works with my Window box when I want to do a straight duplication of a DVD for archival purposes.

My only complaint is that it takes two hands to close the tray unless you secure the unit to something heavier (which I have done using 3M Dual Lock tape). I would recommend this item to a friend! The casing is pretty flimsy, but it works well enough if you don't abuse it. It works well with Mac Blu-ray Player software (not free). I haven't tried to use it to burn DVD's. It's completely Plug&Play on all computers and performs well reading and writing. The USB cable has an extra plug to draw extra power from another USB port and it's long enough to use on my 2013 Macbook Pro, but this seems to be unnecessary in all the computers I've used it on so far.

My only gripe is a small one. The top casing is quite thin and flexible. The first few times I went to push the drive tray back in, my natural tendency was to push with my thumb and rest my fingers on the top to keep the drive from sliding away.

This deforms the opening of the case, stopping the tray from closing. So now I hold the drive from the back. Like I said, it's a minor problem, which might make closing the drive a two handed operation for people with smaller hands. I would recommend this item to a friend! If you push in exactly where the 'compact disc' logo is on the left your success rate of latching will go from 10% to 95%. The plastic case is really cheap, but the bang-for-buck is decent value. I bought to copy my DVD and BD library into iTunes and i've had decent success. If i had a bigger budget I'd like to have bought a higher-quality model, but I also use a laptop and don't like to introduce an add'l 120v device when not absolutely necessary, so this model is a fair trade-off.

Probably about 5% of my discs just won't read in this player but I've had worse success rate on my old internal DVD player in my previous mac book pro. The speed is plenty, i doubt a 'faster' model will actually get anything done faster; the software still has to rip the data. If you want to playback directly, then of course you don't need more than 1x speed anyhow.
